A new home with a rooftop farm.
Professor Eric Bernard directs the graduate landscape architecture program at the University of New Mexico. So he sees his new home in Mesa del Sol as a chance to practice what he teaches.
“Energy is something we should all be thinking about,” Eric says. “Water conservation, walkable communities — all these things are important. And right now Mesa del Sol has some of the latest and greatest ideas.”
Take the Bernards’ new home, for example. It will not only feature both photovoltaic and solar hot water panels, it will provide food for the whole family. Yes, the Bernards are building what may be the very first home in Albuquerque with a rooftop vegetable garden.
Of course, all that food production won’t stop Eric, wife Jill, son Allen and daughter Katy from enjoying the treats at Rose’s Table Café. “Rose is a delightful human being and has a great product. It’s so nice that she’s right in our neighborhood.”
Because if there’s one thing more important than conserving water, it’s having a reliable source of stacked enchiladas.
